iCUBE Bukit Teraja Expedition 2019


Universiti Brunei Darussalam under its iCUBE recently had organized a scientific expedition to Bukit Teraja from 7th July to 10th July 2019. It involved a total of 45 people; consisting of 26 researchers, five Brunei Forestry Department staff from the Brunei National Herbarium (BRUN), one photographer, seven support staff and six Royal Brunei Police Force Rangers. The eight foreign researchers were representatives of iCUBE member universities (Korea University and National University of Singapore) as well as other invited researchers from University of the Sunshine Coast, Palacky University, Ehime University and SMART. iCUBE 5th Scientific Committee Meeting

Under the International Consortium of Universities for the Study of Biodiversity and the Environment (iCUBE), Universiti Brunei Darussalam recently organised the 5th iCUBE Scientific Committee Meeting virtually on November 25, 2020 via Zoom platform.

The online meeting brought together researchers from Korea University, Monash Univesity, National University of Singapore and Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The meeting was chaired by Dr Joyce Teo Siew Yean, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Vice President (Global Affairs), and co-chaired by Dr Hussein Taha, Head of iCUBE Secretariat.

The meeting sought to discuss on future iCUBE activities. Several proposed activities were discussed, which include the proposal for iCUBE webinar series and iCUBE Global Classroom. The iCUBE members are also in support to align iCUBE research activities with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which was previously suggested in the Scientific Committee Workshop organised in 2019. This means that iCUBE will focus on three areas i.e. biodiversity, environment and sustainability. The members were also briefed on UBD mobility programmes by Dr Sabrina Daud, Director of Global Relations.


UBD Hosts 3rd iCUBE Governing Board Meeting

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) hosted the third International Consortium of Universities for the Study of Biodiversity and the Environment (iCUBE) Governing Board Meeting on the 13th May 2016 at the Open Concourse at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) in its capacity as Secretariat of the Consortium. The welcoming remarks delivered by Yang Mulia Datin Dr Hjh Anita Binurul Zahrina Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Hj Abd Aziz, Vice Chancellor, Universiti Brunei Darussalam marked the start of the 3rd iCUBE Governing Board Meeting.

This biennial meeting brings together leaders from the member universities to discuss among others, the activities to address, for both research and education, issues and problems related to biodiversity, climate change, and the environment. Members of the iCUBE are King’s College of London (KCL), University of North Carolina (UNC), Korea University (KU), University of Auckland (UA), University of Bonn (UB), Monash University (MU), National University of Singapore (NUS) and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

This year’s Governing Board Meeting will report on existing and future bilateral or multilateral cooperation under iCUBE in the areas of biodiversity, climate change, and the environment and in the social science and policy aspects. Among the main items on the agenda were the planning of an expedition to Bukit Teraja to study its diverse flora and fauna, joint workshops and energy projects in a biodiversity perspective. Highlighted agenda in the meeting are the presentation on the iCUBE milestones from 2011 to 2016 and the report on the 3rd iCUBE Scientific Committee Meeting by Associate Professor Dr Kushan Tennakoon, Director (Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Research); Gastropod Thermal Biology and Climate Change in Tropics Workshop (8-11 December 2014) by Associate Professor David Marshall; iCUBE Bukit Teraja Reconnaissance Trip (4-7 June 2014) by Dr Rahayu Sukmaria Hj Sukri, Dean (Faculty of Science) and UBD-Korea Social Science Workshop Collaboration by Professor Dato Hj Mohamed Hj Abdul Majid .

To date, iCUBE has held numerous activities including governing and scientific board meetings, workshops, conferences and expeditions to encourage dynamic discussion and education in areas of biodiversity and the environment.

iCUBE 3rd Scientific Committee Meeting

Universiti Brunei Darussalam recently hosted the 3rd Meeting of the Scientific Committee of the International Consortium of Universities for the Study of Biodiversity and the Environment (iCUBE). Held on 9th December 2014 at the CORE, this meeting brought together iCUBE researchers from iCUBE member universities from King’s College of London, University of North Carolina, Korea University, University of Auckland, University of Bonn, Monash University and Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Discussions during the meeting focused on the planning of iCUBE activities for the next two years, and saw the tabling of several proposed workshops from the current iCUBE Chair, UBD. Amongst the proposed activities is the iCUBE Bukit Teraja Expedition, due to be held towards the end of 2015 in collaboration with the Forestry Department, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources. Members were also presented the next iCUBE activity, a workshop to be hosted and sponsored by Korea University on 2 to 5 February 2015. Members were also briefed on the introduction of a graduate-level dual degree programme between the Faculty of Science, UBD and the Division of Environmental Science and Ecology, Korea University. A significant milestone for iCUBE, the dual degree is an initiative proposed by Korea University and is due to be finalized during the workshop at KU.

The meeting was chaired by Assoc Prof Dr. Kushan Tennakoon, Director of the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) and Prof Dato Haji Mohamed Abdul Majid, Dean of UBD’s Faculty of Science.  The 3rd iCUBE Scientific Committee Meeting was held consecutively with the iCUBE Gastropod Thermal Biology and Climate Change in the Tropics Workshop organized by UBD on 8 to 11 December 2014.
